“COME ON, KADE, it’s chill; just open the door,” I say, knocking on the door and trying to get him to open up. I feel bad. He’s clearly embarrassed, and Kaelyn is leaned against the wall, rolling her eyes.

“Can we just go? Please?”

“Just…if you need to go, I get it. I’m going to wait for him.” I can’t leave him like this. He’s sick, and as far as I can tell, he’s alone. Anything could happen, and I’m not walking away knowing that tomorrow I could find out things went wrong.

She sighs, and I can tell she’s annoyed and uncomfortable. “Wow. Laney was right. You really are an asshole.” I don’t know who Laney is, but clearly word is spreading faster than I can get a handle on.

“Yeah. Maybe I am.” I don’t want to stand here and argue with her, and she’s going to believe what she wants to believe. I don’t know what else to say to her, and when she turns and stalks off, I don’t chase after her. “Kade, please.” I knock again.

“Go be with your girlfriend,” Kade mumbles, but I knock again.

“She’s not my girlfriend,” I tell him. “Come on, man. Let me help you get home.” I wonder where his friends are, if I’d recognize them if I saw them. Probably not. I don’t know them well enough. But after a second, the lock turns. He doesn’t open the bathroom door, but I do, and step inside. “You okay?”

“Do I look okay?” he asks. He has eyeliner streaked down his cheeks and there’s a sheen of sweat on his forehead. Clearly, he’s not okay, and the scowl on his face reflects that, but the snarkiness is a lot to take in when I’m trying to help him.

“Great, you’re a mean drunk.” I’d be annoyed if I weren’t worried.

“I’m fine. I’m just… I dunno,” he mumbles. He’s still kneeling by the toilet. Searching around, I find a washcloth and wet it, and when he hasn’t moved, I help him, leaning him back against a bathtub and wiping down his face, kneeling next to him and dabbing at his lips. He looks rough. Exhausted. Way too drunk to be here.

“Let me get you home.”

He doesn’t move. “Did I ruin things with your girlfriend?” he asks, and I soften.

“She isn’t my girlfriend. You didn’t ruin anything.” I look at him, studying his face. “Kade, I was with her because my friend needed me to keep her busy so he could get with her friend. I’m not into her.”

“Oh,” he says; then he reaches for me, letting me haul him up.

“You need to tell your friends you’re leaving?”

“No. They ditched me as soon as we got here. I just want to go home.”

I wonder if he knows how to get there, if he can find it drunk. I’m not taking any chances. “Okay. I’ll take you.” I pull him to his feet, arm around him, and I guide him out the bathroom door, around the pool of puke, and down the stairs.
